About this exercise

The lever seated hammer grip shoulder press is a machine-based overhead pressing movement performed with a neutral (hammer) grip, where the palms face each other. This grip reduces stress on the shoulder joints compared to a pronated press and effectively targets the front and side deltoids.

How to Perform

  • Adjust the seat height so the handles are at approximately shoulder level when seated
  • Sit down, plant your feet flat on the floor, and grip the handles with a neutral grip (palms facing each other)
  • Pin your back firmly against the pad and brace your core
  • Press the handles upward in a controlled arc until your arms are nearly fully extended overhead
  • Pause briefly at the top without locking out your elbows
  • Slowly lower the handles back to the starting position at shoulder height
  • Maintain an upright torso throughout; avoid arching your lower back
