About this exercise

The plate-loaded lever row is a machine-based back exercise that uses a pivoting arm loaded with weight plates to create a rowing motion. The fixed arc of the lever provides stability and consistent resistance, making it easy to overload the lats, mid-back, and traps with heavy loads while keeping form consistent.

How to Perform

  • Load the desired weight plates onto the lever arm and position yourself at the machine according to its design (chest pad or standing)
  • Grip the handles with both hands using a neutral or overhand grip
  • Brace your core and maintain a neutral spine throughout the movement
  • Pull the handles toward your lower chest or abdomen by driving your elbows back
  • Squeeze your shoulder blades together and hold briefly at the peak contraction
  • Lower the lever arm under control back to the starting position with arms fully extended
  • Avoid rounding your back or using momentum to lift the weight
