About this exercise

A machine shoulder press performed in a reverse seated position — facing the pad rather than away from it — which shifts the emphasis from the front deltoids to the rear deltoids and upper back muscles. It is useful for balancing shoulder development and improving posterior shoulder strength.

How to Perform

  • Adjust the seat height so your hands can grip the handles at approximately shoulder level when seated facing the pad
  • Sit facing the machine with your chest against the pad and grip the handles firmly
  • Engage your core and keep your back straight throughout the movement
  • Press the handles forward and slightly upward until your arms are nearly fully extended
  • Pause briefly at the top without locking out the elbows
  • Slowly return the handles to the starting position with control
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
