About this exercise

A machine-based seated exercise that isolates scapular retraction using a pronated (overhand) grip. By squeezing the shoulder blades together at the end of each rep, you directly target the middle trapezius and rhomboids, improving posture and upper-back strength.

How to Perform

  • Sit at the seated row machine and select an appropriate weight
  • Grasp the handles with a pronated (overhand) grip, arms extended in front of you
  • Sit upright with a neutral spine and chest tall
  • Initiate the movement by retracting your shoulder blades, pulling them together
  • Keep your arms relatively straight and elbows slightly bent throughout
  • Squeeze the shoulder blades fully together at the end of the range of motion
  • Hold the contraction briefly, then slowly allow the blades to protract back to the start
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
