Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Lever Overhead Triceps Extension.

About this exercise

The lever overhead triceps extension uses a plate-loaded machine to isolate the triceps with the arms positioned overhead, placing the long head of the triceps under maximal stretch at the bottom of each rep. The seated, guided movement path reduces the need for stabilizer recruitment and lets you focus on the working muscle through a full range of motion.

How to Perform

  • Adjust the seat height so the machine handles align with your elbows when your arms are raised
  • Sit with your back against the pad and grip the handles with both hands, elbows pointing forward
  • Position your upper arms alongside your ears with elbows bent at approximately 90 degrees
  • Press through your hands to extend your elbows fully, contracting the triceps at the top
  • Slowly lower the weight back to the starting position under control
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
