About this exercise

The Lever Hip Extension is a machine-based isolation exercise that targets the glutes and hamstrings by driving the leg backward against resistance. Performed on a lever or plate-loaded machine, it allows for controlled loading of the posterior hip muscles through a full range of motion.

How to Perform

  • Adjust the machine pad to rest against your lower thigh just above the knee
  • Stand facing the machine and grip the handles for stability
  • Brace your core and hinge slightly at the waist
  • Drive one leg backward and upward in a controlled arc, squeezing the glute at the top
  • Hold the peak contraction for a moment before slowly returning to the start position
  • Complete all reps on one side, then switch if performing unilaterally
