About this exercise

A machine-based exercise that targets the gluteus medius and outer thigh by pushing the legs outward against resistance. Performed on a hip abduction machine, this movement isolates the glute abductors and helps build hip width and lateral stability.

How to Perform

  • Adjust the hip abduction machine to fit your body and set the desired resistance
  • Sit upright on the machine with your back against the pad and the leg pads positioned against the outside of your knees or thighs
  • Place your feet flat on the footrests with legs together in the starting position
  • Press both legs outward against the pads as far as the range of motion allows
  • Hold briefly at the widest point to maximise glute abductor contraction
  • Slowly bring your legs back together to the starting position under control
