About this exercise

The belt squat sumo squat uses a belt squat machine with a wide sumo stance to emphasize the inner thighs, glutes, and quadriceps while completely unloading the spine and upper body. The wide foot position shifts more stress onto the adductors and glutes compared to a standard squat stance.

How to Perform

  • Fasten the belt around your hips and step onto the machine platform in a wide sumo stance, toes angled out at roughly 45 degrees
  • Hold the handles lightly for balance, keeping your chest tall and your back straight
  • Initiate the descent by pushing your knees out in line with your toes while sitting your hips back and down
  • Descend until your thighs are at or below parallel to the floor
  • Drive through your heels and mid-foot to return to the standing position
  • Squeeze your glutes at the top before beginning the next rep
