About this exercise

The lever assisted standing chin-up uses a counter-weighted machine to reduce the load on your upper body, making chin-ups accessible at any strength level. You stand on a platform that counterbalances a portion of your bodyweight, allowing you to focus on the pulling pattern with proper form. It is an excellent exercise for building lat width and biceps strength.

How to Perform

  • Set the counter-weight to an appropriate level — a higher weight means more assistance
  • Stand on the platform and grip the handles with a supinated (palms-facing-you) grip, shoulder-width apart
  • Brace your core and hang at full arm extension before beginning
  • Pull your chest toward the handles by driving your elbows down and back
  • Continue pulling until your chin clears the top of the handles
  • Pause briefly at the top, squeezing your lats
  • Lower yourself in a controlled manner back to the starting position
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
