About this exercise

A chin-up performed on an assisted pull-up machine that uses a counter-weighted platform to reduce the load, making the movement accessible for those building toward an unassisted chin-up. The underhand grip emphasizes the lats and biceps.

How to Perform

  • Set the counter-weight on the assisted pull-up machine to the desired assistance level — a higher weight means more assistance
  • Kneel or stand on the platform and grasp the handles with an underhand (supinated) grip, hands shoulder-width apart
  • Hang with your arms fully extended and core engaged
  • Pull yourself upward by driving your elbows down and back, leading with your chest
  • Continue pulling until your chin clears the bar or the handles
  • Pause briefly at the top position
  • Lower yourself under control until your arms are fully extended
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
