Leg Extension Plank

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Leg Extension Plank.

MediumGlutesCore

About this exercise

The leg extension plank builds core stability and glute strength by alternately lifting one leg off the ground while holding a plank position, forcing the core to resist rotation and maintain alignment. The single-leg lift increases the anti-rotation and anti-lateral-flexion demands placed on the stabilizing muscles.

How to Perform

  • Begin in a high plank (push-up position) with wrists under shoulders and body in a straight line
  • Brace your core firmly and keep your hips level
  • Lift one leg off the floor, extending it straight back and up without rotating the hips
  • Hold briefly at the top, then lower the leg back to the starting position
  • Repeat on the opposite leg, alternating in a controlled manner
  • Avoid letting your lower back arch or your hips twist during the lift
  • Continue for the desired number of alternating repetitions

About the Leg Extension Plank

The Leg Extension Plank is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
