Lat Lean to Cat Cow

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Lat Lean to Cat Cow.

EasyMiddle back

About this exercise

The lat lean to cat cow combines a lateral lat stretch with the classic cat-cow spinal mobility drill. From a quadruped or seated position, you first lean to the side to open the lat and side body, then flow into spinal flexion and extension, making it an effective warm-up or cool-down sequence for the entire back.

How to Perform

  • Begin on all fours with wrists under shoulders and knees under hips
  • Shift your hips toward one side while reaching the opposite arm overhead to feel a stretch along that lat
  • Hold the lateral lean briefly, then return to center
  • Flow into cat: round the spine toward the ceiling, tuck the chin and pelvis
  • Then flow into cow: drop the belly toward the floor, lift the chest and tailbone
  • Continue alternating the lateral lean with the cat-cow cycle for the desired number of repetitions or duration
