Kneeling Reach and Thread

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Kneeling Reach and Thread.

EasyObliquesMiddle back

About this exercise

The Kneeling Reach and Thread combines an overhead reach with a thread-the-needle rotation from a kneeling position. The movement stretches the lats, obliques, and rear shoulder while promoting thoracic spine mobility. It is an effective warm-up or cool-down drill for relieving tension in the back and shoulders.

How to Perform

  • Kneel on the floor with knees hip-width apart and sit back slightly toward your heels
  • Reach one arm long overhead, extending through the fingertips
  • Thread that arm underneath your body toward the opposite side, rotating your thoracic spine
  • Lower your shoulder toward the floor as you reach as far as comfortable
  • Hold the end position for the desired duration, breathing steadily
  • Return to the starting position and repeat on the opposite side
