Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Kneeling Hip Flexor Stretch (Transverse).

EasyQuadriceps

About this exercise

The kneeling hip flexor stretch in the transverse plane adds a rotational element to the classic half-kneeling stretch, engaging the obliques and deepening the hip flexor release through trunk rotation. This variation is especially useful for athletes who need rotational hip mobility for sport or daily movement.

How to Perform

  • Kneel on one knee on a mat with your other foot planted forward in a lunge position
  • Tuck your pelvis under and shift your hips forward to establish the base hip flexor stretch
  • Rotate your torso toward the front leg, allowing the shoulder to open in the transverse plane
  • Extend the arm on the side of rotation upward or outward to increase the rotational stretch
  • Hold the position and breathe steadily for the prescribed duration
  • Release and repeat on the opposite side
