Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Kneeling Hip Flexor Stretch (Sagittal).

About this exercise

The kneeling hip flexor stretch in the sagittal plane is the classic half-kneeling lunge stretch that elongates the iliopsoas and rectus femoris. By shifting the hips forward while keeping the pelvis tucked, this stretch directly targets the hip flexors of the rear leg through their full sagittal range.

How to Perform

  • Kneel on one knee on a mat with your other foot planted forward, shin roughly vertical
  • Squeeze the glute of the rear leg and tuck your pelvis under to flatten the lower back
  • Slowly shift your hips forward until you feel a stretch deep in the front of the back hip
  • Raise the arm on the kneeling side overhead and lean slightly back to intensify the stretch
  • Hold the position and breathe steadily for the prescribed duration
  • Return to the starting position and repeat on the other side
