Kettlebell Suitcase Deadlift

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Kettlebell Suitcase Deadlift.

MediumGlutes

About this exercise

A unilateral deadlift variation where the kettlebell is held at the side of the body, like a suitcase. This asymmetric loading challenges the core's anti-lateral-flexion stability while training the posterior chain through a full hip hinge. It is an effective movement for identifying and correcting left-right strength imbalances.

How to Perform

  • Place a kettlebell on the floor beside one foot
  • Stand with feet hip-width apart, the kettlebell to one side
  • Hinge at the hips and bend your knees to reach down and grip the kettlebell with one hand
  • Keep your spine neutral and your shoulders level — resist the pull to tilt toward the weight
  • Drive through your heels and extend your hips and knees to stand upright
  • Hold briefly at the top with your torso tall and core braced
  • Lower the kettlebell back to the floor with control, maintaining a neutral spine throughout
  • Complete all reps on one side, then switch
