About this exercise

The kettlebell straight leg deadlift is a hip-hinge movement performed with the knees nearly locked, placing intense stretch and load on the hamstrings throughout the full range of motion. Holding a kettlebell in each hand (or one hand) allows a comfortable neutral grip and freedom to let the weights travel close to the legs.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet hip-width apart holding a kettlebell in each hand in front of your thighs
  • Keep a soft bend in the knees — do not allow them to flex further during the movement
  • Hinge at the hips, pushing them back as you lower the kettlebells toward the floor
  • Keep your back flat, chest open, and the kettlebells close to your legs throughout
  • Lower until you feel a maximal stretch in your hamstrings without rounding your lower back
  • Drive through your hips to return to a tall standing position
  • Squeeze your glutes at the top and reset before the next rep
