About this exercise

The kettlebell standing bottoms-up one arm shoulder press is an advanced pressing variation where the kettlebell is held upside down — bell facing the ceiling — demanding high grip strength and wrist stability to keep it balanced throughout the press. This instability forces deep shoulder stabiliser and rotator cuff activation that conventional pressing cannot replicate.

How to Perform

  • Hold a kettlebell by the handle with one hand, bell pointing upward (bottoms-up grip)
  • Stand tall with feet shoulder-width apart, core braced and glutes engaged
  • Bring the kettlebell to shoulder height with the elbow at roughly 90 degrees and wrist straight
  • Squeeze the handle firmly to stabilise the bell before initiating the press
  • Press the kettlebell straight overhead until the arm is fully extended, keeping the bell upright
  • Hold briefly at the top, maintaining tension in the grip and shoulder
  • Lower under control back to the rack position and repeat for all reps before switching arms
