About this exercise

The kettlebell single leg split squat with ring is an advanced unilateral lower-body exercise where the rear foot is suspended in a gymnastic ring while holding kettlebells. The combination of a heavy implement and an unstable rear-foot surface maximises quad and glute recruitment while training balance and hip stability simultaneously.

How to Perform

  • Set a gymnastic ring at approximately knee height and stand a lunge-length in front of it
  • Hold a kettlebell in each hand at your sides and place the top of your rear foot into the ring
  • Brace your core, keep your chest tall, and lower your hips straight down under control
  • Descend until your front thigh is roughly parallel to the floor or your rear knee nearly grazes the ground
  • Drive through the heel of your front foot to press back up to the start position
  • Keep the ring as steady as possible throughout each repetition
  • Complete all reps on one leg before switching to the other
