About this exercise

The Kettlebell Romanian Deadlift is a hip-hinge movement that places heavy emphasis on the hamstrings and glutes. Holding a kettlebell in each hand (or one with both hands), you lower by pushing the hips back while keeping a neutral spine, then drive through the hips to return to standing.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet hip-width apart, holding a kettlebell in each hand in front of your thighs with an overhand grip
  • Brace your core, retract your shoulder blades, and maintain a neutral spine
  • Push your hips back while lowering the kettlebells along the front of your legs, keeping them close to your body
  • Continue until you feel a strong stretch in your hamstrings or your lower back begins to round (typically shin level)
  • Drive the hips forward and squeeze the glutes to return to a standing position
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
