About this exercise

The Kettlebell Rear Lunge is a reverse lunge variation performed while holding a kettlebell, placing greater emphasis on the quadriceps and glutes with less forward knee travel than a forward lunge. Stepping backward reduces stress on the knee joint while still delivering a strong lower-body training stimulus.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet hip-width apart holding a kettlebell at chest height or by the handle at your side
  • Brace your core and keep your chest tall throughout the movement
  • Step one foot directly backward and lower your rear knee toward the floor
  • Keep your front shin as vertical as possible and your torso upright
  • Lower until the rear knee nearly touches the ground
  • Push through the front heel to drive yourself back to the starting position
  • Repeat on the other side or alternate legs for the desired number of reps
