About this exercise

The Kettlebell Rear Delt Row is a bent-over rowing variation where the elbows are flared wide and pulled high, shifting the primary emphasis from the lats to the posterior deltoids and upper back. It is an effective way to address rear shoulder weakness and improve postural balance between the front and back of the shoulder girdle.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and hinge forward at the hips until your torso is roughly parallel to the floor
  • Hold a kettlebell in each hand, arms hanging straight down with palms facing each other or facing back
  • Keeping your elbows flared wide (at about 90 degrees from your torso), row both kettlebells upward by driving the elbows toward the ceiling
  • Squeeze the rear deltoids and upper back at the top
  • Lower the kettlebells in a controlled manner back to the starting position
  • Maintain a flat back and neutral spine throughout all repetitions
