Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Kettlebell Single Arm Swing.

MediumGlutesHamstrings

About this exercise

A unilateral variation of the classic kettlebell swing that challenges anti-rotation core stability in addition to developing explosive hip extension power. The single-arm loading forces the core and glutes to work harder to counteract rotational forces, making it an effective conditioning and posterior chain exercise.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and hold a kettlebell in one hand with an overhand grip
  • Hinge at the hips and swing the kettlebell back between your legs, keeping your back flat
  • Drive your hips forward explosively, squeezing your glutes at the top to propel the kettlebell to shoulder height
  • Keep your arm relaxed and let the kettlebell float momentarily at the top with a neutral wrist
  • Control the kettlebell back down into the hip hinge for the next rep
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching hands
