Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Kettlebell Neutral Grip Bench Press.

MediumMiddle chest

About this exercise

A flat bench press with kettlebells where you maintain a neutral (hammer) grip throughout, with palms facing each other. This grip reduces shoulder strain, increases triceps engagement, and leverages the natural handle orientation of the kettlebell for a joint-friendly pressing variation.

How to Perform

  • Lie flat on a horizontal bench holding a kettlebell in each hand with palms facing each other (neutral grip)
  • Position the kettlebells at the sides of your chest with elbows tucked closer to your torso than in a standard press
  • Press both kettlebells straight up until your arms are fully extended, keeping the neutral grip
  • Hold briefly at the top without locking out aggressively
  • Lower the kettlebells slowly and under control back to chest level
  • Keep your feet flat on the floor and maintain a stable, neutral wrist position throughout
