About this exercise

The Kettlebell Lateral Step-Up is a unilateral lower-body exercise where you step up sideways onto a platform while holding kettlebells, challenging the quadriceps, glutes, and hip stabilisers in a frontal-plane movement pattern. Approaching the step from the side places unique demands on hip abductor and adductor coordination compared to a traditional forward step-up.

How to Perform

  • Stand to the side of a sturdy step or box, holding a kettlebell in each hand at your sides
  • Place your near foot flat on top of the step, ensuring your entire foot is fully supported
  • Drive through the heel of the elevated foot to press yourself up until the lead leg is straight
  • Bring the trailing leg up to stand fully on the step with feet together
  • Slowly lower the trailing leg back to the floor with control
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching to the other leg
