About this exercise

The kettlebell goblet squat mobility drill uses the counterbalance of a kettlebell to help you squat deeper with an upright torso, improving hip, ankle, and thoracic mobility. Pausing at the bottom of the squat and using elbows to press the knees out makes it an effective warm-up or active recovery movement.

How to Perform

  • Hold a kettlebell by the horns at chest height, feet slightly wider than shoulder-width with toes turned out slightly
  • Brace your core and descend into a deep squat, keeping the chest up and the kettlebell close to your body
  • At the bottom, place your elbows inside your knees and gently press outward to open the hips
  • Hold the bottom position for 2–3 seconds, breathing deeply and relaxing into the stretch
  • Drive through your heels to stand, squeezing your glutes at the top
  • Repeat the sequence, using each rep to sink slightly deeper and improve your range of motion
