Kettlebell Goblet Lateral Step Up

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Kettlebell Goblet Lateral Step Up.

MediumGlutesQuadriceps

About this exercise

The kettlebell goblet lateral step up combines a lateral approach to a step or box with a goblet-hold kettlebell, challenging the quadriceps and glutes from a frontal plane angle. Stepping up sideways emphasizes the outer thigh and hip abductor while the goblet hold engages the core and upper body. It develops unilateral leg strength, balance, and coordination.

How to Perform

  • Stand to one side of a step or box, holding a kettlebell at chest height in a goblet grip (both hands cupping the handle)
  • Position your near foot fully on top of the step, with your outside foot on the floor
  • Press through the heel of the raised foot to step up and bring your trailing foot up to meet it
  • Stand fully upright on top of the step with both feet together
  • Lower the trailing foot back to the floor in a controlled manner
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching
