About this exercise

The kettlebell alternating row is a unilateral back exercise performed in a hinged position, rowing each kettlebell to the hip one arm at a time. Alternating sides challenges core stability and helps correct muscular imbalances between left and right.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, holding a kettlebell in each hand
  • Hinge forward at the hips until your torso is nearly parallel to the floor, letting the kettlebells hang at arm's length
  • Brace your core and keep your back flat throughout the movement
  • Row one kettlebell toward your hip, driving your elbow straight back
  • Pause briefly at the top, then lower the kettlebell back to the starting position
  • Repeat on the opposite arm, alternating sides for each rep
