About this exercise

The jumping pull-up is a plyometric variation of the standard pull-up that uses a jumping motion to generate upward momentum, making it accessible for beginners building pulling strength and useful for athletes practising explosive bar work. The legs assist the upper body, reducing the load on the lats and biceps while still training the pull-up pattern.

How to Perform

  • Stand directly beneath the pull-up bar and grip it with both hands shoulder-width apart, palms facing away from you
  • Bend your knees and lower into a quarter squat position
  • Explosively jump upward, using the momentum to pull your chin above the bar
  • Guide the bar movement with your lats and arms during the ascent
  • Control your descent slowly, resisting gravity as you lower yourself back to a hanging position
  • Absorb the landing with soft, bent knees and reset for the next rep
