About this exercise

The Jackknife squat, also known as the Donkey squat, is a challenging bodyweight move performed in a deep squat position while rising onto the toes. It simultaneously trains calf strength and quadriceps endurance while demanding significant ankle mobility and balance.

How to Perform

  • Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, toes pointed slightly outward
  • Lower into a full squat until your thighs are below parallel, keeping your chest up and your back straight
  • Extend your arms in front of you for balance if needed
  • While holding the deep squat position, rise up onto the balls of your feet by lifting your heels
  • Hold the elevated position briefly, squeezing your calves
  • Lower your heels back to the floor with control
  • Drive through your heels to stand back up to the starting position
