About this exercise

An elevated variation of the kneeling hip flexor stretch where the rear foot is placed on a raised surface such as a bench or step. Elevating the rear foot increases the range of extension at the hip and intensifies the stretch on the hip flexors and rectus femoris.

How to Perform

  • Place one foot on a bench or elevated surface behind you and step the other foot forward into a lunge position
  • Lower your rear knee toward the floor, keeping your front shin vertical
  • Keep your torso upright and brace your core lightly
  • Shift your hips forward until you feel a strong stretch along the front of the rear thigh and hip
  • Tuck your pelvis slightly to deepen the stretch and avoid overarching your lower back
  • Hold the position, breathing steadily
  • Release and repeat on the other side
