About this exercise

Hip abduction is a bodyweight exercise that targets the outer thighs and glutes by moving the leg away from the body's midline. It can be performed lying on your side or standing, making it a versatile move for strengthening the hip abductors and improving lateral hip stability.

How to Perform

  • Lie on your side with legs straight and stacked on top of each other, supporting your head with your lower arm
  • Engage your core to keep your torso stable throughout the movement
  • Keeping the top leg straight and toes pointing forward, slowly raise it toward the ceiling
  • Lift until you feel a strong contraction in the outer glute and hip
  • Pause at the top, then lower the leg back down in a controlled manner
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching to the other
