About this exercise

The Hindu squat is a traditional bodyweight squat variation originating from Indian wrestling training, in which the heels rise off the ground as you descend and the arms swing backward and then forward to generate momentum. It develops leg strength and endurance while also training ankle mobility and balance.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and arms extended forward at chest height
  • Begin to squat down while simultaneously swinging your arms backward and allowing your heels to rise off the floor
  • Continue descending until your thighs are below parallel and your heels are fully raised, with hands near your hips
  • Swing your arms forward as you drive back up to standing, lowering your heels to the floor as you rise
  • Keep your back straight and your knees tracking over your toes throughout the movement
  • Repeat fluidly for the desired number of repetitions
