About this exercise

Head to Knee Pose (Janu Sirsasana) is a seated yoga forward bend performed one leg at a time. With one leg extended and the other bent with the sole of the foot pressing into the inner thigh, you fold forward over the straight leg to deeply stretch the hamstrings, lower back, and calves.

How to Perform

  • Sit on a mat with both legs extended in front of you
  • Bend your right knee and press the sole of your right foot against the inner left thigh, letting the right knee rest comfortably toward the floor
  • Inhale to lengthen your spine and sit tall
  • Exhale and hinge forward from your hips over the extended left leg, keeping the spine long
  • Reach for your left foot, ankle, or shin — wherever your flexibility allows
  • Relax your shoulders away from your ears and let your head drop naturally
  • Hold the stretch for the desired duration, then switch sides

About the Janu Sirsasana

The Janu Sirsasana is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
