About this exercise

The hand bike (arm cycle ergometer) is an upper-body cardio exercise where you pedal a set of hand cranks to drive your heart rate up while working the arms and shoulders. It is a low-impact option especially suited for rehabilitation or as a warm-up.

How to Perform

  • Sit in front of the arm ergometer and adjust the seat so your arms can comfortably reach the handles with a slight bend at the elbows
  • Grip the handles and begin pedalling in a smooth, continuous circular motion
  • Maintain an upright posture with your core engaged throughout
  • Set resistance and duration according to your fitness goal
  • Pedal at an even cadence, breathing steadily for the duration of the session
