About this exercise

The hamstring stretch is a foundational flexibility exercise that lengthens the biceps femoris, semitendinosus, and semimembranosus muscles along the back of the thigh. Regular practice improves hip mobility, reduces lower back tension, and aids recovery.

How to Perform

  • Sit on the floor with both legs extended straight in front of you
  • Keep your back straight and sit tall on your sit bones
  • Hinge forward from the hips, reaching your hands toward your feet or shins
  • Avoid rounding your lower back — the movement should come from the hip hinge, not spinal flexion
  • Hold the stretched position for 20–40 seconds, breathing steadily
  • Slowly return to the upright seated position and repeat as needed
