About this exercise

The half squat side reach combines a partial squat with a lateral torso reach to simultaneously challenge the lower body and mobilize the lateral core and obliques. It is an effective dynamic warm-up or mobility drill that improves hip and trunk range of motion.

How to Perform

  • Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and toes pointing slightly outward
  • Lower into a half squat by bending your knees to approximately 45 degrees, keeping your chest up
  • From the squat position, extend one arm and reach it diagonally down to the side, rotating your torso slightly
  • Feel the stretch through your obliques and lateral trunk on the opposite side
  • Return to the upright half-squat position and then reach to the other side
  • Continue alternating side reaches in a controlled, fluid motion
  • Complete the desired number of repetitions on each side
