About this exercise

A targeted hip-opening stretch performed in a half-kneeling position, placing the ankle of the rear leg across the front thigh to create a figure-4 shape that deeply stretches the glutes and hip external rotators. Effective for relieving tightness and improving hip mobility.

How to Perform

  • Come into a half-kneeling position with your right knee on the floor and left foot planted in front
  • Lift your right ankle and place it across your left thigh, just above the knee
  • Sit tall with your spine long and core lightly engaged
  • Gently hinge forward at the hips until you feel a stretch in the right glute
  • Hold the position, breathing steadily and relaxing deeper into the stretch with each exhale
  • Avoid rounding your lower back — the movement should come from hinging at the hips
  • Release and repeat on the other side
