About this exercise

The forward pulse lunge with hands overhead combines a stationary lunge pulse with raised arms to increase core and shoulder demand. Holding the arms overhead shifts the center of gravity upward, intensifying balance requirements and engaging the midsection throughout the entire set.

How to Perform

  • Stand upright and step one foot forward into a lunge position, lowering the back knee toward the floor
  • Raise both arms straight overhead, keeping them close to the ears
  • From the bottom lunge position, pulse up and down a few inches in small controlled bounces
  • Keep the front knee aligned over the ankle and do not let it cave inward
  • Maintain a tall torso and braced core — avoid leaning forward
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching legs
