Bar Hang Back Stretch

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Bar Hang Back Stretch.

EasyRear shouldersTrapezius

About this exercise

The fixed bar back stretch involves gripping a stationary bar (such as a pull-up bar or squat rack bar) and allowing the bodyweight to decompress and elongate the spine and lats. This passive hang or supported lean is an effective way to relieve spinal compression, improve lat flexibility, and improve overhead shoulder mobility.

How to Perform

  • Grip a fixed bar with both hands at approximately shoulder width or slightly wider, using an overhand grip
  • Step back or bend your knees slightly so that your bodyweight creates traction through the arms and back
  • Allow your shoulders to relax and your spine to lengthen, letting gravity decompress the vertebrae
  • Keep your core lightly engaged to avoid excessive lumbar extension
  • Hold the stretch position for the target duration, breathing steadily throughout
  • Gently step forward or stand to release
