About this exercise

The Extended Side Angle is a standing yoga pose that opens the hips, stretches the inner thighs and obliques, and builds strength and balance in the legs. It is performed one side at a time and provides a deep lateral stretch through the entire side body.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet wide apart, turning your right foot out 90 degrees and your left foot in slightly
  • Bend your right knee to a 90-degree angle, keeping the knee over the ankle
  • Lower your right forearm onto your right thigh or bring your right hand to the floor outside your right foot
  • Extend your left arm overhead, reaching it alongside your ear to create one long line from heel to fingertips
  • Open your chest toward the ceiling and gaze up at your extended hand
  • Hold for the desired duration, then rise and repeat on the other side
