About this exercise

An advanced bodyweight exercise that combines a standard push-up with a maximal-effort explosive push-off, propelling the hands off the ground at the top of each rep. It develops upper-body power, fast-twitch muscle fibre recruitment, and reactive strength in the chest, shoulders, and triceps.

How to Perform

  • Start in a high plank position with hands slightly wider than shoulder-width and the body forming a straight line from head to heels
  • Lower your chest to the floor under control, as in a standard push-up
  • At the bottom, generate maximum force and push up explosively so your hands leave the ground
  • Land with soft elbows to absorb the impact and immediately go into the next rep
  • Keep the core tight and hips level throughout — do not let the lower back sag
  • Focus on speed and power during the push phase, not just height
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions

About the Plyometric Push-Up

The Plyometric Push-Up is a foundational movement that builds strength and muscle through controlled, progressive overload. Train it 1 to 2 times per week with 3 to 5 working sets per session, gradually adding weight or reps as form holds up.
