About this exercise

The exercise ball lying side lat stretch uses a stability ball to create a lateral bend that targets the latissimus dorsi and obliques on one side at a time. Lying draped sideways over the ball allows gravity to passively elongate the entire side of the torso from the hip to the armpit.

How to Perform

  • Place a stability ball on the floor and position your hip against the side of it
  • Lower your body sideways so your ribs and hip drape over the ball
  • Extend your top arm overhead toward the floor on the opposite side to increase the stretch
  • Allow your legs to anchor to the floor for stability
  • Relax and breathe, letting gravity deepen the side stretch with each exhale
  • Hold for the desired duration, then slowly push back up and switch sides
