Exercise Ball Lat Stretch

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Exercise Ball Lat Stretch.

EasyMiddle back

About this exercise

The exercise ball lat stretch uses a stability ball to create a lengthening position for the latissimus dorsi and lower back. Draping over the ball allows gravity to passively open and elongate the entire side of the torso, making it an excellent recovery or warm-up stretch for the back.

How to Perform

  • Place a stability ball on the floor in an open space
  • Kneel beside the ball and drape your upper body over the side of it
  • Extend both arms overhead toward the floor to increase the stretch through the lats
  • Allow your body to relax and let gravity deepen the stretch naturally
  • Breathe steadily and hold the position for the desired duration
  • Slowly push yourself back upright to come out of the stretch
