About this exercise

The elliptical lateral walk involves stepping sideways on an elliptical trainer, shifting the primary training stimulus from the sagittal plane to the frontal plane. This variation targets the outer thighs and hip abductors while maintaining the low-impact benefits of the elliptical machine.

How to Perform

  • Step onto the elliptical trainer and position yourself sideways so your leading foot faces the direction of travel
  • Hold the stationary handles firmly for balance throughout the exercise
  • Begin stepping in the lateral direction, driving through the outer hip and glute of the leading leg
  • Keep your torso upright and avoid leaning excessively to one side
  • Maintain a steady, controlled pace for the desired duration
  • Switch direction at a midpoint to train both sides equally
