About this exercise

The Dumbbell Wood Chop is a dynamic rotational exercise performed by swinging a single dumbbell held with both hands diagonally across the body from a high to low position. It develops rotational power and oblique strength while also engaging the shoulders and hips.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, holding one dumbbell with both hands above one shoulder
  • Keep your arms nearly straight and initiate the movement by rotating your torso
  • Swing the dumbbell diagonally downward across your body toward the opposite hip
  • Allow your back heel to lift naturally as you rotate through the movement
  • Reverse the motion under control, bringing the dumbbell back above the starting shoulder
  • Complete all reps on one side, then switch to the other
