About this exercise

The dumbbell upright shoulder external rotation targets the external rotators of the shoulder — primarily the rear deltoid and infraspinatus — while standing upright. It improves shoulder stability and rotator cuff health, making it a valuable corrective and accessory exercise.

How to Perform

  • Stand upright holding a dumbbell in each hand with your elbows bent to 90 degrees and upper arms parallel to the floor
  • Keep your upper arms stationary and rotate your forearms upward and outward until they point toward the ceiling
  • Pause briefly at the top, squeezing the rear deltoids
  • Slowly lower your forearms back to the starting position under control
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
