About this exercise

The dumbbell unilateral scapula raise is a single-arm exercise that isolates the upper trapezius through pure scapular elevation, helping to build upper back thickness and correct muscle imbalances between sides. The controlled depression at the bottom position provides a full range of motion stretch.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and hold a dumbbell in one hand at your side
  • Let the weight gently pull your shoulder blade downward to achieve a fully depressed starting position
  • Without bending your elbow, shrug your shoulder straight up toward your ear by elevating the scapula
  • Pause at the top with maximum contraction of the upper trapezius
  • Slowly lower the shoulder back down in a controlled manner, allowing the scapula to fully depress
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching to the other arm
