About this exercise

The dumbbell supported squat uses a pair of dumbbells held in front of the body as a counterbalance, making it easier to maintain an upright torso and reach full depth. It is an effective lower-body builder for beginners or anyone working on squat mechanics.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand at chest height or extended in front of you
  • Brace your core and keep your chest tall throughout the movement
  • Push your hips back and bend your knees to lower into a squat, using the dumbbells for balance
  • Descend until your thighs are at least parallel to the floor
  • Drive through your heels to press back up to the starting position
