Dumbbell Straight-Leg Deadlift

Step by step instructions, muscle activation and variants for the Dumbbell Straight-Leg Deadlift.

MediumGlutesLower back

About this exercise

The dumbbell straight-leg deadlift is a hip-hinge exercise performed with legs kept nearly straight throughout the movement, maximising hamstring and lower back engagement. Unlike the stiff-leg variation, the knees are locked out or kept only very slightly soft, creating a longer lever and a deeper stretch in the hamstrings. Dumbbells allow the hands to travel freely on both sides of the legs.

How to Perform

  • Stand with feet hip-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand in front of your thighs
  • Lock or nearly lock your knees and maintain that position throughout the set
  • Hinge forward at the hips, lowering the dumbbells toward the floor while keeping your back flat and core braced
  • Continue lowering until you reach the maximum stretch in your hamstrings without rounding the lower back
  • Reverse the movement by engaging the hamstrings and glutes to drive the hips forward and return to standing
  • Squeeze the glutes at the top of each repetition
  • Repeat for the desired number of repetitions
